北アメリカが原産です。わが国へは昭和時代の初めに渡来しました。今では都会を中心に広く帰化しています。「おなもみ」に比べて全体に大きく、高さは1〜2メートルになります。葉は三角状で互生し、3〜5裂します。雌雄異花で、8月から10月に開花します。かぎ状の棘がある総苞も、「おなもみ」よりひとまわり大きく、長径で2〜2.5センチになります。 
キク科オナモミ属の一年草で、学名は Xanthium occidentale。英名は Noogoora burr。 
The noogoora burr (Xanthium occidentale) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to North America. It was introduced into Japan the early Showa Era (about 80 years ago). Now, this herb is naturalized widely in city areas. It is lager than the cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium) and can reach 1-2 m in height. The leaves are deltoid, alternate and three to five lobated. It is dioecious and bloom from August to October. The bracts have hooked prickles and they are one size larger that the Cocklebur and can reach 2-2.5 cm in major axis.
