中央・南アメリカが原産で、世界一大きな葉をつける被子植物です。大きいものでは直径２メートルを越え、葉の縁がそって盥のようになっているため、幼児を３人くらいは乗せることができるそうです。学名は「偉大な」ビクトリア女王と、アマゾン川の流域に分布することから名づけられたものです。南アメリカのガイアナ共和国の国花にもなっています。

スイレン科オオオニバス属の多年草で、学名は Victoria regia（syn. Victoria amazonica）。英名は Victoria regia。

Victoria regia belongs to Nymphaeaceae (the Waterlily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Central and South America. It is also an angiosperm with largest leaves in the world. For large ones, it exceeds 2 m in diameter, and has basin-like edges. It is possible to put three little infants. The scientific name was named after Queen Victoria and the distribution in the basin of the Amazon River. It is also a national flower of the Republic of Guyana in South America.
