おおばなさるすべり (大花百日紅)

インドから東南アジア、オーストラリアの北部に分布しています。高さは１０〜２０メートルほどになります。葉は大きく卵状楕円形です。枝先に大きな円錐花序をだし、ピンク色から薄紫色の花を咲かせます。フィリピンでは「バナバ（Banaba）」と呼ばれ、葉は煎じて糖尿病や肥満の民間薬として利用されてきました。その薬効は医学的にも証明されています。 |

ミソハギ科サルスベリ属の常緑高木で、学名は Lagerstroemia speciosa。英名は Pride of India、Queen's crape myrtle。 |

Pride of India (Lagerstroemia speciosa) belongs to Lythraceae (the Loosestrife family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from India to Southeastern Asia and northern Australia. This tree can reach 10-20 m in height. The leaves are large and ovate-elliptic. The large panicles are borne on the terminal branches and bloom pink to pale purple flowers. It is called Banaba in the Philippines, the leaves have been prepared a decoction for diabetes or obesity. |
