わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道それに北半球に広く分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の草地や砂礫地に生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で互生し、茎や枝に細い棘が密生しています。６月から７月ごろ、淡い紅色の花を咲かせます。果実は赤く熟し、ジャムやマーマレードに利用されます。

バラ科バラ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rosa acicularis。英名は Prickly rose。

The Prickly rose (Rosa acicularis) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from the Chubu regions of Honshu northward to Hokkaido in Japan and widely in the Northern Hemisphere. It grows in subalpine to alpine meadows and gravelly areas and grows 1 to 2 m high. It has odd pinnate compound leaves that grow in alternate arrangements, and its stems and branches are densely covered with thin spines. The fruits ripen to red and are used to make jam and marmalade.
