The Chinese astilbe (Astilbe chinensis) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in Japan's Tsushima Island, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, and Russia. It grows in forests, forest edges, and grasslands, reaching a height of 50 to 100 cm. The basal leaves are 2-3 times triternate compound, with leaflets that are rhombic-elliptic or ovate and have biserration along the margins. From June to September, it produces a terminal panicle, blooming with small lilac, purple, or pale pink flowers. Many cultivars have been developed and it is widely cultivated in shaded gardens.
