ブラジル南部からウルグアイ、パラグアイそれにアルゼンチン北部にかけて分布しています。高さは４５センチほどになり、葉は円形です。全体に短い腺毛が密生し、粘液を分泌しています。食虫植物に分類されることもあります。春から夏にかけて、緑がかった黄色い花を咲かせます。花弁の内側は濃い黄色からオレンジ色です。若い果実は食用にされますが、成熟すると堅く鋭いかぎ爪のような棘ができ、大型の哺乳類に付着して種子を分散させます。別名で「きばなつのごま（黄花角胡麻）」とも呼ばれます。

ツノゴマ科ツノゴマ属の一年草で、学名は Martynia lutea。英名は Yellow unicorn-plant、Devil's claw。

The Yellow unicorn-plant (Martynia lutea) belongs to the family Martyniaceae. It is an annual herb that is distributed from southern Brazil to Uruguay, Paraguay and northern Argentina. It grows up to 45 cm tall and has circular leaves. The entire plant is densely covered with short glandular hairs and secretes mucus. It is sometimes classified as an insectivorous plant. The greenish yellow flowers bloom from spring to summer. The inside of the petals is dark yellow to orange. The young fruits are edible, but when mature, they produce hard, sharp, claw-like thorns that attach to large mammals and disperse the seeds. It is also known as "Kibana-tsunogoma" in Japan.
