わが国の本州から四国・九州に分布しています。山地のやや乾いた尾根などに生え、高さは１０〜１５メートルになります。葉は広卵形から楕円形で先端は尖り、縁には不揃いな鋸歯または重鋸歯があります。５月ごろ、短枝の先に散形花序をだし、白色または淡紅色の花を咲かせます。果実は球形のナシ状果で、１０月ごろ、黄緑色から淡紅色に熟します。リンゴのような風味があり、食べることができます。和名はウラジロノキに似ていて、果実が大きいことから。別名で「おおずみ（大酸実）」とも呼ばれます。

The "Oo-urajiro-no-ki" (Malus tschonoskii) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It grows on somewhat dry ridges in mountainous areas and reaches a height of 10 to 15 m. The leaves are broadly ovate to elliptical with pointed tips and irregularly serrated or double-serrated margins. Around May, it produces corymbs at the tips of short branches, bearing white or pale pink flowers. The fruit is spherical and pear-shaped, ripening from yellow-green to pale red around October. It has an apple-like flavor and is edible. Its Japanese name is derived from its resemblance to the Urajiro-no-ki (Sorbus japonica) and its large fruit.
