わが国の固有種で、北海道南部の大平山と中部の崕山（きりぎしやま）に分布しています。石灰岩の礫地に生え、高さは１０〜３０センチになります。全体に白い綿毛に被われています。６月から８月ごろ、白い苞葉に囲まれた頭花を咲かせます。苞葉の数が多く、苞葉の綿毛が厚くふっくらとしているのが特徴です。雌雄異株の傾向が強いそうです。

キク科ウスユキソウ属の多年草で、学名は Leontopodium hayachinense var. miyabeanum。英名はありません。

"Oohira-usuyuki-so" (Leontopodium hayachinense var. miyabeanum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and is distributed on Mount Ohira in southern Hokkaido and Mount Kirigiyama in central Hokkaido. It grows on limestone gravel and is 10 to 30 cm tall. The entire area is covered with white wooly hair. It produces flower heads surrounded by white bract leaves from June to August. It is characterized by a large number of bract leaves and thick, plump wooly hairs on the bracts. They tend to be dioecious.
