The "Ooshima-utsugi" (Deutzia naseana var. naseana) belongs to Hydrangeaceae (the Hydrangea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is an endemic species found throughout Japan's Amami Islands, ranging from Amami Oshima to Kikaijima, Kakeroma Island, Ukejima, and Tokunoshima. It grows along forest edges and roadsides in lowland to mountainous areas, reaching a height of 1.5 to 2 m. The bark is pale grayish-brown and peels off with age. The leaves are elliptical to ovate-elliptical, with fine serrations along the margins, and are arranged in opposite pairs. From around March to April, it produces panicles at the tips of its branches, bearing white flowers. The fruit is a nearly spherical capsule.
