わが国の北海道から本州・四国、それに千島列島に分布しています。亜高山帯の林内に生え、高さは２０〜４０センチになります。茎には４稜があり、直立します。葉は楕円形から長楕円形で４個が輪生します。６月から７月ごろ、上部の葉腋から集散花序をだし、小さな淡黄緑色の花を咲かせます。花冠の先は４裂します。

アカネ科ヤエムグラ属の多年草で、学名は Galium kamtschaticum var. acutifolium。英名はありません。

The "Oobano-yotsuba-mugura" (Galium kamtschaticum var. acutifolium) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Hokkaido, Honshu and Shikoku of Japan, as well as the Kuril Islands. This herb grows in subalpine forests and can reach 20-40 cm in height. The stem is quadrangular and erect. The leaves are elliptic to oblong and four whorled. The cymes are borne on the upper axiles and bloom pale yelowish-green flowers from June to July. The corolla is four-lobate.
