アメリカの南西部、カンザス州西部からアリゾナ州それにメキシコにかけて分布しています。乾燥した砂礫地の平原に生え、高さは２．４メートルほどになります。茎節は濃緑色の円筒形で、こぶが目立ち、赤色からピンク色の棘が生えます。４月から６月ごろ、ピンク色から赤紫色の花を咲かせます。果実は長さ４センチほどの液果で、黄色く熟します。

サボテン科オプンティア属の団扇サボテンで、学名は Opuntia imbricata (syn. Cylindropuntia imbricata)。英名は Tree cholla。

The Tree cholla (Opuntia imbricata) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a prickly pear that is native to the southwestern United States; from western Kansas to Arizona and Mexico. This cuctus grows in arid rocky flats and can reach about 2.4 m in height. The segments are dark green, cylindrical with red to pink spines and have pronounced tubercules. The pink to magenta flowers come in April through June. The fruits are berries, about 4 cm long and ripen yellow.
