アメリカの西南部、アリゾナ州西部・オクラホマ州南部からメキシコの北部にかけて分布しています。砂漠や草原に生え、高さは９０センチほどになります。茎の太さは２．５センチくらいで、よく分枝して潅木状になり、全体に長い棘が生えています。５月から６月ごろ、茎の周りに黄緑色から褐色の花を咲かせます。果実は長さ１．５センチほどで、鮮やかな赤色に熟し、冬のあいだも茎についたままです。

サボテン科オプンティア属の団扇サボテンで、学名は Opuntia leptocaulis。英名は Desert Christmas cactus、Christmas cactus。

The desert Christmas cactus (Opuntia leptocaulis) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a prickly pear that is distributed to the southwestern United States; from western Arizona and southern Oklahoma to northern Mexico. This cactus occurs in deserts or grasslands and can reach about 90 cm in height. The stem is about 2.5 cm across, much branched and shrubby. The plants are covered with long spines. The yellowish-green to brown flowers come around the stem from May to June. The fruits are berries about 1.5 cm long and ripen in red. They remain through winter.
