The Opuntia schumanni belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a prickly pear that is distributed from Colombia to Venezuela in South America. It is a small shrub, reaching 1 to 2 m in height. The stem nodes are about 25 cm long, elliptic to oblong, and dull dark green in color. The spines are 2 to 10 and about 4.5 cm long. The flowers are yellowish red or orange, turning dull red over time. The fruit is elliptic, dark purple, fleshy, and used as a food coloring.
