西インド諸島が原産です。乾燥した岩礫地に生え、高さは１〜３メートルになります。茎節は扁平で倒卵形から長楕円形の葉状枝で、２種類の棘（２〜６個の中棘と縁棘）が生えます。６月から８月ごろ、薄黄色の花を咲かせます。果実は多汁の液果で赤色に熟し、食用に利用されます。園芸上は、「きんぶせん（金武扇）」と呼ばれます。

サボテン科オプンティア属の団扇サボテンで、学名は Opuntia tuna。英名は Elephantear prickly pear。

The elephantear prickly pear (Opuntia tuna) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a prickly pear that is native to the West Indies. This pricky pear grows in dry rocky areas, and can reach 1-3 m in height. The stem segments are flat, obovate to oblong cladodes with two kinds of spines; 2-6 central spine and radials. The light yellow flowers bloom from June to August. The fruits are fleshy berries, ripen red and used as food.
