オプンティア・ウルガリス (単刺団扇)

アメリカの南部からメキシコ、それに南アメリカのブラジルからアルゼンチンに分布しています。原産地は不明です。高さは４〜５メートルほどになり、しばしば明瞭な幹があります。茎節は狭倒卵形から長楕円状披針形をしていて、鋭い棘が１〜２個ずつ生えています。６月から９月ごろ、赤橙色の縞のある黄色い花を咲かせます。果実は赤紫色に熟し、食用になります。和名では「たんしうちわ（単刺団扇）」と呼ばれます。写真中１１・下は、園芸品種の「バリエガタ（cv. Variegata）」。 |

サボテン科オプンティア属の団扇サボテンで、学名は Opuntia vulgaris（syn. Opuntia ficus-indica）。英名は Drooping tree pear、Barbary fig、Prickly pear。 |

The Drooping tree pear (Opuntia vulgaris) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a prickly pear that is distributed from the southern United States to Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. The native area is unknown. This cactus can reach 4-5 m in height and often has distinct stems. The segments are narrow obvate to oblong-lanceolate with 1-2 acute spines. The yellow flowers with red-orange stripes come in June to September. The fruits ripen burgundy-red and edible. The 12th and bottom photos show the horticultural variety 'Variegata'. |
