メキシコおよびアメリカが原産です。岩場の砂漠に生え、高さは５メートルほどになります。短い単幹から真っ直ぐに伸びた、いくつかの細い茎があります。茎には１２〜１９個の稜があり、濃褐色から黒色の棘が生えて、成熟すると灰色に変化します。成熟には１５０年かかります。成熟した植物体は、一年に一回、漏斗型の白色の花をつけ、夜に咲いて朝には萎みます。花はふつう４月から６月に咲き、蝙蝠媒花です。和名では「大王閣（だいおうかく）」と呼ばれます。

The organ pipe cactus (Stenocereus thurberi) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a treelike cuctus that is native to Mexico and the United States. This cactus grows in rocky deserts and up to a height of about 5 m. It has several narrow stems that rise vertically, growing from a single short trunk. Each stem has 12 to 19 ribs that bear dark brown to black spines that turn gray as it matures. It takes 150 years to reach maturity. The older plants produce funnel-shaped white flowers annually which are open at night and close by the morning. The flowers are usually bloom from April to June, and usually pollinated by bats.
