The "Orizuru-shida" (Polystichum lepidocaulon) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from the Kanto region of Honshu and westwards to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and south-eastern China. It grows in mountain forests, especially near the coast, and is 30-70 cm tall. The leaves are pinnate compound, grayish green, without a sheen, and have a hard papery texture. The leaf stalk base has brownish-red scales. The sorus is arranged in two parallel rows on both sides of the midrib of the frond, and the indisum is small and round. The Japanese name for this plant is based on the appearance of the rachis of the leaf, which extends and bears an apical unisexual bud, resembling a paper crane hanging from a string. In Taiwanese, it is called "鞭葉耳蕨", and in Chinese it is called "鞭葉耳蕨" (fan ye er jue).
