南アフリカ、ケープ地方の固有種です。冬季降雨地帯に生え、高さは５０センチほどになります。冬の降雨が始まった秋、成長がはじまり、暑い夏が始まった春、花後に球根を残して枯れます。３〜８個の線状葉がつき、直立するか広がります。葉の縁には微毛があります。花は黄色からオレンジ色で、ときに白色、しばしば褐色または緑色の咽があり、冬から春に咲きます。和名では「たいりんおおあまな（大輪大甘菜）」とも呼ばれます。

ユリ科オーニソガラム属の多年草で、学名は Ornithogalum dubium。英名は Sun star、Star of Bethlehem。

The sun star (Ornithogalum dubium) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to South Africa; the Cape Province. This herb grows in winter rainfall areas, and up to a height of 50 cm. It starts growing in fall when the winter rains start and dies back after flowering in spring when the hot summer weather begins. It has 3-8 linear leaves which can be erect or spreading. The leaf margins are minutely hairy. The flowers are yellow to orange and rarely white, often with a brown or green centre, and are borne in winter or spring.
