南アフリカとスワジランドに分布しています。丘陵や山地の露頭に生え、高さは３０〜１００センチになります。葉は濃緑色で光沢があり剣状、直立したロゼットを形成します。花は星状でアイボリーまたは白色、中心に目立つ黒色の子房があります。花は円錐花序に夏、咲きます。この球根植物は落葉性で、冬に休眠します。

ユリ科オーニソガラム属の多年草で、学名は Ornithogalum saundersiae (syn. Galtonia saundersiae)。英名は Giant chincherinchee。

The giant chincherinchee (Ornithogalum saundersiae) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South Africa and Swaziland. This herb grows on rocky outcrops in hills and mountains, and it can reach 30-100 cm in height. The leaves are dark green, shiny, sword-shaped and form an erect rosette. The flowers are star-shaped, ivory or white with a pronounced black ovary in the centre. They bloom in the conical cluster in summer. This bulbous plant is deciduous and dormant in winter.
