わが国の本州から四国、九州に分布しています。タケ類のなかでも最も小型で、高さは２０〜４０センチほどにしかなりません。葉は桿のうえに扇を広げたようにつきます。刈り込みにも強いので、庭園や斜面の緑化にも使われています。

イネ科メダケ属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Pleioblastus argenteostriatus var. disticha。英名はありません。

"Oroshima-chiku" (Pleioblastus argenteostriatus var. disticha) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bumboo that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It is the smallest of the bamboo species, reaching only 20 to 40 cm in height. The leaves are attached to the culm in the shape of an outstretched fan. It is used for gardens and slope greening because of its resistance to trimming.
