わが国の大隅諸島にある屋久島の固有種です。島の南東部にある小田汲川（おだくみがわ）の渓流沿いに生え、高さは３０〜１００センチになります。１９３１年に発見されましたが、乱獲などにより絶滅状態となっています。葉が極端に細長く、花弁は濃い朱赤色で切れ込みが深く、うさぎの耳のように見えるのが特徴です。花弁同士の合着は見られません。雄しべは５個、雌しべは１個ありますが、発育不全で結実しません。別名で「おたくみさつき（小田汲皐月）」とも呼ばれます。

ツツジ科ツツジ属の常緑低木で、学名は Rhododendron indicum f. otakumi。英名はありません。

The "Otakumi-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron indicum f. otakumi) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is endemic to Yakushima Island in Japan's Osumi Islands. It grows along the streams of the Odakumi River in the southeastern part of the island and reaches a height of 30 to 100 cm. Although it was discovered in 1931, it is now considered extinct due to overharvesting and other factors. It is characterized by its extremely slender leaves and deep-lobed, deep vermilion petals that resemble rabbit ears. The petals do not fuse together. Although it has five stamens and one pistil, they are underdeveloped and do not produce fruit. It is also known by the alternative name "Otakumi-satsuki".
