中国東北部から朝鮮半島に分布しています。高さは６０センチほどになります。葉は掌状複葉で、５個の卵形の小葉がつき、茎頂に輪生します。発芽から３年を過ぎないと花が咲きません。５月から６月ごろ、散形花序に小さな淡い黄緑色の花を咲かせます。果実はやや扁平の球形で、夏に赤く熟します。この根にはギンセノシドが含まれ、漢方薬として使用されます。別名で、「やくようにんじん（薬用人参）」、「ちょうせんにんじん（朝鮮人参）」とも呼ばれます。

ウコギ科トチバニンジン属の多年草で、学名は Panax ginseng (syn. Panax schin-seng)。英名は Korean ginseng、Chinese ginseng。

The Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) belongs to Araliaceae (the Ginseng family). It is a perennial herb that is native to northeastern China and the Korean Peninsula. This herb can reach about 60 cm in height. The leaves are palmately compound with five ovate leaflets and whorled atop of solitary stem. The flowering occurs three years after germination. The small, pale greenish yellow flowers bloom in the umbels from May to June. The fruits are flattish globe and ripen red in summer. The ginseng root contains insenosido, and it is used as a Chinese medicine.
