The Coastal waterhyssop (Bacopa monnieri) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from Europe to North Africa, Asia, and North and South America. It grows in ponds, waterways, rice paddies, and wetlands, and its stems creep along the ground, reaching a length of around 30 cm. The leaves are ovate-shaped, 8-20 mm long, and fleshy, with serrated edges and opposite pairs. From April to June, it produces small white to light purple flowers. The fruit is a capsule that is about 5 mm long and ovate-shaped, and contains many minute seeds. This species is imported and sold for use as ornamental aquatic plants, but in Japan it is designated as a "highly invasive alien species" under the Invasive Alien Species Act.
