中国原産の「こうちく(光竹)」の園芸品種です。桿は直径7.5センチ、高さは12メートルほどになります。若い桿は黄緑色ですが、まもなく黄金色に変わります。品種名はアメリカ農務省の園芸家であったロバート・ヤング(Robert A. Young)に因みます。

イネ科マダケ属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Phyllostachys viridis cv. Robert Young。英名は Robert Young bamboo。

The Robert Young bamboo (Phyllostachys viridis cv. Robert Young) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a cultivated variety of the Pigskin bamboo that is native to China. The culms can reach about 12 m in height and 7.5 cm in diameter. The culms are yellowish green when young, soon turn into sunny yellow. The variety name is derived from Robert A. Young, a horticulturist who was on the staff of USDA.
