The Oxalis flava belongs to Oxalidaceae (the Wood sorrel family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South Africa. The bulbs are about 10 to 20 mm long, and the stem has several brown, stem-enfolded scales. It has pedately compound leaves with 4 to 7 narrowly oblong to linear leaflets. 25 mm diameter, bright yellow flowers bloom from September to November. The edges of the petals are sometimes tinged with purple.
