The Violet wood sorrel (Oxalis violacea) belongs to Oxalidaceae (the Wood sorrel family). It is a perennial herb that is widely distributed in the eastern and central parts of the United States. It grows in light woods, along river banks, and in prairies, and is 10 to 20 cm tall. It has trifoliate leaves with heart-shaped leaflets. From April to June, it produces red to reddish-purple flowers on scapes. There are 10 stamens.
