わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国、九州に分布しています。山地の岩場あるいは樹上に自生しています。６月ごろ、２０センチほどの花茎のうえに淡い紫色や紅色、白色などの花を咲かせます。別名で「いわらん（岩蘭）」、「ありまらん（有馬蘭）」などとも呼ばれます。環境省レッドデータで絶滅危惧Ⅱ類（VU）に指定されています。

The "Ucho-ran" (Orchis graminifolia) belongs to Orchdaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Kanto region of Honshu westward to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It grows wild on rocks or trees in mountainous areas. Around June, it produces pale purple, red, or white flowers on a 20-cm-long scape. It is also known as "Iwa-ran" or "Arima-ran" in Japan. It is listed as an endangered species II (VU) in the Ministry of the Environment's Red Data.
