カエデ科カエデ属の落葉低木で、学名は Acer crataegifolium。英名は Hawthorn-leaved maple。
The hawthorn-leaved maple (Acer crataegifolium) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed southward from Miyagi and Gunma prefectures on Honshu to the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows in montane forest edges and can reach 6-8 m in height. The bark is grayish-brown with a green tinge. The ovate, opposite leaves are the smallest in the maple genus. They are occasionally trilobate. The racemes appear on terminal branches and bear pale yellow flowers from April to May. The fruits are samaras with wings that open to almost 180 degrees.
