アブチロン属は､熱帯から温帯にかけて１００種類以上あり､さらにたくさんの品種が作られています。わが国でも、関東地方以西の温暖な地方なら､戸外でも越冬できます。本種はブラジル原産で、５月から１０月にかけて真っ赤な提灯のような花を下垂して咲かせます。赤く見えるのは萼で、黄色いのが花弁です。

アオイ科イチビ属の常緑低木で、学名は Abutilon megapotamicum。英名は Trailing abutilon。

The Trailing abutilon (Abutilon megapotamicum) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). Abutilon is a genus of up to 100 species occurring in tropical to temperate regions. Many cultivars have been developed. This shrub can survive outdoors in mild-winter locales extending west from the Kanto district of Japan. It is native to Brazil. The bright red, drooping, lantern-like flowers, consisting of reddish sepals and yellow petals, bloom from May to October. (edit by Greg Brockelbank)
