The Burclover (Medicago polymorpha) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an annual or a biennial herb that is native to the coastal areas of the Mediterranean. It is now widely naturalized in the United States, Australia, and Asia. It was introduced to Japan in the Edo period (1603-1867) as a pasture grass and has become naturalized in many parts of Japan. It grows in grasslands, along roadsides, and along seashores, and is 10 to 60 cm tall. The stems are branched and either crawl on the ground or grow obliquely upward. Yellow papillionaceous flowers bloom from March to May in inflorescences in the leaf axils. The fruit is a slightly flattened, rounded pea pod with radial spines.
