The "Umegasa-so" (Chimaphila japonica) belongs to the family Pyrolaceae. It is a evergreen perennial herb that is native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, China and Taiwan. This herb grows in hillside to montane forests, and it can reach 10-15 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate, coarsely serrated and arranged in 2-3 whorled on the stem nodes. The 1-2 white flowers bloom atop of stems from June to July. The corolla is about 1 cm across and five partited. The fruits are depressed-globose capsules.
