ウンカリナ属はマダガスカル島の固有植物です。ウンカリナ属には１４種と１変種があり、すべてがマダガスカル島に分布しています。やや乾燥した森林に生え、高さは２～３メートルになります。すべてのウンカリナ属は、その根茎に多量の水分を貯めています。葉は掌状に浅裂します。花は黄色い筒状です。ウンカリナの蒴果には、尖った鉤状の突起があり、動物の毛皮や皮膚にとりつきます。また、葉を水にひたすと粘液が分泌され、それをシャンプーや整髪料ととして用いられます。

ゴマ科ウンカリナ属の落葉低木で、学名は Uncarina sp.(属の総称)。英名は Uncarina, Succulent sesame。

Uncarina belongs to the Pedaliaceae (the Sesame family). It is a small deciduous tree that is endemic to Madagascar. In the genus Uncarina there are 14 species and 1 variety, all of which occur in Madagascar. This tree grows in the rather dry forests. and up to a height of about 2-3 m. All Uncarina species are able to store large amounts of water in the root system. The leaves are divided into lobes palmetely. The flowers are yellow tubular. Uncarina's capsule fruits have spiked hooks that anchor themselves to the fur and skin of animals. When leaves are drowned in water, mucus is secreted, and it is used as shampoo and hair conditioner.
