マダガスカルの南部および南西部に分布しています。砂漠や乾燥した低木地帯に生え、高さは３～５メートルになります。半多肉質で根茎を形成するコーデックス（塊根植物）です。葉は掌状に浅裂します。花は黄色い筒状花で先端が５裂し、喉部は暗紫色をしています。花は一日花です。ウンカリナの蒴果には、尖った鉤状の突起があり、動物の毛皮や皮膚にとりつきます。また、葉を水にひたすと粘液が分泌され、それをシャンプーや整髪料ととして用いられます。

ゴマ科ウンカリナ属の落葉低木で、学名は Uncarina grandidieri。英名は Succulent sesame, Mousetrap plant。

The Succulent sesame (Uncarina grandidieri) belongs to Pedaliaceae (the Sesame family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to southern and southwestern Madagascar. It grows in deserts and dry shrublands and reaches a height of 3 to 5 m. It is a semi-succulent caudex plant that forms a rhizome. The leaves are palmately lobed. The flowers are yellow, tubular, and five-lobed at the tip, with a dark purple throat. They are ephemeral, blooming for only a single day. The capsules of Uncaria have sharp, hook-like projections that cling to animal fur and skin. Additionally, when the leaves are soaked in water, they secrete a mucilage that is used in shampoos and hair styling products.
