The "Unzen-mamushi-gusa" (Arisaema unzenense) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is a perennial herb that is an endemic species found on Mount Unzen in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. It grows in mountainous forest understories and reaches a height of 30 to 60 cm. The leaves are palmately compound, bearing 7 to 15 leaflets. The leaflets are lanceolate to narrowly ovate or oblong, and their margins are often finely serrated. From around April to May, it produces flowers in a spadix enclosed by a spathe at the stem apex. The spathe is green, with the tip of the margin elongated and pointed. The appendages taper to a thread-like point, and the upper part curves forward. The fruit ripens to a deep red color from September to October.
