中国原産の「くろちく（黒竹）」の一品種です。桿に茶褐色の雲状の斑紋がはいります。丹波地方で多く栽培されているため、「たんばはんちく（丹波斑竹）」とも呼ばれます。京銘竹の一つとされ、建築用や工芸用に利用されています。

イネ科マダケ属のタケ類で、学名は Phyllostachys nigra f. boryana。英名は Leopard bamboo。

The leopard bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra f. boryana) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a form of the black bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) that is native to China. The culms have brownish-red cloudlike mottles. It is also called "Tanba-han-chiku" because of it often cultivated at the Tanba region of Honshu. It is famous as a fancy bamboo of Kyoto, and its timber is used for architecture and artifact.
