The Michelia yunnanensis belongs to Magnoliaceae (the Magnolia family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to central-south China. This shrub grows in highland thickets, 1100-2300 m elevation, and can reach about 4 m in height. The stems are much-branched and the twigs and leaves are dense. The leaves are obovate to narrow-obovate, leathery, deep green and glossy. The abaxial sides are covered with appressed hairs. The fragrant, creamy-white flowers bloom from March to April. This shrub is planted as an ornamental plant and used for making perfume.
