わが国の九州西部が原産です。ＤＮＡ鑑定から、種子親が「きしゅうみかん（紀州蜜柑）」、花粉親が「くねんぼ（九年母）」だと推定されています。この果実は柑橘類の中で最も甘い品種のひとつで、とろけるような柔らかい質感があり、ふつうは種なし、マンダリンオレンジと同じくらいの大きさです。和名は、柑橘類の名産地であった中国浙江省の温州に因んで付けられました。

ミカン科ミカン属の常緑低木で、学名は Citrus unshiu。英名は Unshu mikan、Satsuma orange。

The Unshu mikan (Citrus unshiu) belongs to Rutaceae (the Citrus family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the western parts of Kyushu in Japan. It is extrapolated from DNA analysis that the seed parent is "Kishu-mikan" (Citrus kinokuni) and the pollen parent is "Kunenbo" (Citrus reticulata). Its fruit is one of the sweetest citrus varieties, with a meltingly tender texture and usually seedless, about the size of other mandarin oranges (Citrus reticulata). The Japanese was named from "Wenzhou", Zhejiang Province in China, which was a famous production district of citrus fruits.
