わが国の本州、福島県以西の太平洋側から中国地方の瀬戸内側、九州に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは５０〜９０センチになります。稈は細くて単一、または基部で２〜３個に分枝します。節は著しく膨らんで球状となります。節から常に１本の枝がでます。葉は「みやこざさ（Sasa nipponica）」よりも幅広く、短いのが特徴です。冬になると、葉の縁に白い隈取りがでます。「こぐまざさ（小隈笹）」と呼ばれる仲間のひとつです。

イネ科ササ属の常緑ササ類で、学名は Sasa gracillima。英名はありません。

The "Unzen-zasa" (Sasa gracillima) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bumboo that is distributed from Fukushima Prefecture west to the Pacific Ocean side of Honshu, the Seto Inland Sea side of the Chugoku region and Kyushu in Japan. It grows in mountainous areas and is 50 to 90 cm tall. The culms are thin and single, or branched into two or three at the base. The nodes are markedly swollen and globose. A single branch always emerges from a node. The leaves are broader and shorter than those of "Miyako-zasa" (Sasa nipponica). In winter, the edges of the leaves have white shading. It is a member of a family called "Kokuma-zasa".
