メキシコから中央アメリカが原産です。ワタ属の一種で、現在栽培されている綿花の90パーセントの生産量があります。高さは1〜2メートルになり、夏にクリーム色から黄色の花を咲かせます。花は時間が経つとピンク色に変わります。別名で「りくちわた(陸地棉)」、「きぬわた(帛棉)」とも呼ばれます。写真中3・4は、矮性の園芸品種「綿花子(cv. Watagashi)」。 
アオイ科ワタ属の一年草または多年草で、学名は Gossypium hirsutum。英名は Upland cotton。 
The upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is an annual or perennial herb that is native to Mexico and Central America. This cotton is cultivated in many places and its fibers account for over 90 % of the production. This herb can reach 1-2 m in height. The cream to yellow flowers bloom in summer. Their color turn pink when aging.
