ブラジルが原産です。わが国へは昭和時代のはじめに渡来し、観葉植物として栽培されています。高さは１．５メートルほどになります。葉は厚く、光沢がある暗緑色で、裏面は赤紫色をしています。早春に花茎を伸ばして、総状花序に赤い苞に包まれた花を咲かせます。

クズウコン科ストロマンテ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Stromanthe sanguinea。英名はありません。

The Stromanthe sanguinea belongs to the family Marantaceae. It is an evergreen herb that is native to Brazil. It was introduced to Japan at the beginning of the Showa period (1926-1989) and has been cultivated as an ornamental plant. It grows to about 1.5 m in height. The leaves are thick and glossy dark green with a reddish purple underside. In early spring, it grows a scape and produces flowers in racemes surrounded by red bracts.
