The Charcoal tree (Trema orientalis) belongs to Ulmaceae (the Elm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed in the Ryukyu Islands and Ogasawara Islands of Japan, as well as Taiwan, southern China, Southeast Asia, India, and Australia. It grows in sunny places and grows 12 to 18 m tall. The bark is grayish-white and smooth. It is well branched, and the branches tend to grow horizontally. The underside of the leaf is densely covered with silky hairs. From March to September, cymes emerge from the leaf axils and produce numerous small flowers. The fruit is an ovate drupe that ripens to a black color. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "山黃麻" and "異色山黄麻" (yi se shan huang ma) in Chinese.
