The "Urajiro-hanahiri-no-ki" (Leucothoe grayana var. hypoleuca) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distributed from Yamagata Prefecture to Tottori Prefecture, the Sea of Japan coast in Honshu, Japan. It grows in mountains and alpine zones with heavy snowfall, and grows 10 to 50 cm tall. The leaves are ovate-elliptic to elliptic and alternate. The leaves are smaller than those of "Hanahiri-no-ki", and the underside is white. It produces racemes of urn-shaped, pale green flowers at the ends of its branches from July to August. The axils of the inflorescence are hairless. The fruit is a capsule, which is borne upward. It is often hybridized with the "Hanahiri-no-ki". It is also called "Koshino-hanahiri-no-ki" in Japan.
