The red spikemoss (Selaginella umbrosa) belongs to Selaginellaceae (the Spike-moss family). It is an evergreen moss that is distributed from Central America to South America. Main stems are creeping, side branches extend side-upward and can reach 7-10 cm in height. This moss is characterized by purplish-red color, reverse of the fronds.
