わが国の本州から四国・九州に分布しています。山地から深山に生え、高さは１０〜１５メートルになります。若木の樹皮は紫褐色、成木は灰黒褐色、老木になると鱗片状にはがれます。葉は卵円形または広倒卵形で、縁には重鋸歯があります。また裏面には白い綿毛が密生し、側脈が目立ちます。５月から６月ごろ、枝先に複散房花序をだし、白色の花を咲かせます。果実はナシ状果で、１０月から１１月ごろ赤く熟し、白い皮目が目立ちます。材は器具や薪などに利用されます。

バラ科ナナカマド属の落葉高木で、学名は Sorbus japonica。英名はありません。

"Urajiro-no-ki" (Sorbus japonica) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native from Honahu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows in low to deep mountains and it can reach 10-15 m in height. Young tree's birk is purplish brown, mature tree's birk is grayish black-brown, and furrowed into large scaly ridges when aging. The leaves are ovate-round or broad obovate with doubly serrate margins. And the abaxial side of leaves are covered with white wooly hairs and noticeable secondary veins. The white flowers bloom in the terminal compound corymbs from May to June. The fruits are pome, ripen red in September to October, and they have visible white lenticles. The timber is used for equipments or fuelwood.
