The "Urajiro" (Gleichenia japonica) belongs to Gleicheniaceae (the Forking fern family). It is an evergreen fern that is distributed widely westward from Kanto district of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, as well as Southeast Asia and India. This fern grows in sunny arid mountains. The pair of pinnate leaves on the leaf stalks are borne from the rhizomes and can reach about 2 m in height. This fern grows up new pair of leaves on the shoot apexes in spring. The leaves are 2-4 tiered. Because of the multi-tiered leaves and the white back of the leaves, it is used for New Year's decorations as a lucky charm for the prosperity of descendants and for the both husband and wife with white hair.
