わが国の本州、福島県以南から四国・九州に分布しています。標高１０００メートル以上の山地に生え、高さは３０メートルほどになります。樹冠は広円錐形で、枝は水平に伸びます。濃緑色の葉は光沢があり、裏面には白い気孔線があります。球果は１０センチほどで、紫色を帯びます。別名で「にっこうもみ（日光樅）」とか「だけもみ（岳樅）」と呼ばれます。

マツ科モミ属の常緑高木で、学名は Abies homolepis。英名は Nikko fir、Urajiro-momi。

The Nikko fir (Abies homolepis) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed southward from Fukushima Prefecture on Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows on mountains above 1000 m and can reach about 30 m in height. The crown is broadly conical, and the branches spread in horizontal tiers. The leaves are a glossy dark green and the reverse sides have whitish stoma lines. The strobiles are 10 cm long and tinged purple. (edit by Greg Brockelbank)
