わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに南千島に分布しています。高山帯の草地や礫地に生え、高さは５センチほどになります。茎は地中を長く伸び、枝を出して広がります。葉は倒卵形で厚く、細脈はへこみます。６月から７月ごろ、枝先にクリーム色で壺型の花を２〜５個かたまって咲かせます。果実は球形の液果状で、黒紫色に熟します。葉は秋には真っ赤に紅葉します。別名で、「くまこけもも（熊苔桃）」とも呼ばれます。

ツツジ科ウラシマツツジ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Arctous alpinus var. japonicus。英名は Japanese alpine bearberry。

The Japanese alpine bearberry (Arctous alpinus var. japonicus) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distributed from Chubu region of Honshu north to Hokkaido and the South Kuril Islands. This shrub grows on grasslands and gravel in the alpine zone and is about 5 cm high. The stem grows long in the ground and spreads out with branches. The leaves are obovate and thick, with fine dented veins. The 2 to 5 cream-colored pot-shaped flowers bloom at the tips of the branches from June to July. The fruits are spherical berry-like and ripen to black-purple. The leaves turn bright red in fall.
