The Spiky bog-moss (Sphagnum squarrosum) belongs to Sphagnaceae (the Bog moss family). It is a bryopsida (moss) that is distributed from Hokkaido to Honshu and Shikoku in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, and widely cold regions in the northern hemisphere. It grows in damp, shady places such as around marshlands and grows 15 to 20 cm tall. It is large in shape, similar to "Bog moss" (Sphagnum palustre) and bright green in color. The stems grow erect in clusters, and the branches and leaves are broadly ovate-lanceolate, with sharply pointed tips that curve back dorsally. In Chinese, it is called "粗葉泥炭蘚" (cu ye ni tan xian).
