わが国の各地をはじめ、北半球の温・暖帯地方に広く分布しています。山野に生え、高さは２０〜５０センチになります。茎の節に近い部分は暗紫色です。葉は卵形で、上部では茎を抱きます。４月から１０月ごろ、小さな白い花を咲かせますが、花弁は深く２裂します。雌しべの花柱が５個あるのが特徴です。台湾華語では「鵝兒腸」、中国語では「鵝腸菜（e chang cai）」と呼ばれます。

ナデシコ科ウシハコベ属の多年草で、学名は Myosoton aquaticum (syn. Stellaria aquatica)。英名は Water chickweed、Giant chickweed。

The Water chickweed (Myosoton aquaticum) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a perennial herb that is widely distributed in various parts of Japan and other temperate and warm-temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It grows in the mountains and fields and is 20 to 50 cm tall. The stem is dark purple near the nodes. The leaves are ovate and enfold the stem at the top. It produces small white flowers from April to October, with two deeply lobed petals. It is characterized by the presence of five pistillate styles. In Taiwanese Huayu, it is called "鵝兒腸"; in Chinese, it is called "鵝腸菜"(e chang cai).
