The Tassel flower (Emilia sonchifolia var. javanica) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is widely distributed from southern Honshu to the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, and tropical regions from Asia to Africa. It grows in fields, along roadsides, and along beaches, and is 20 to 40 cm tall. The entire plant is gray-green with coarse hairs scattered on the lower part. The leaves are inverted ovate-elliptic with wavy serrations on the edges, and grow in alternate arrangements enfold the stem. The flower heads are all tubular flowers with a pale reddish-purple corolla. The fruit is a pentagonal, columnar achene. It is called "纓絨花" in Taiwanese Chinese and "紫背草" (zi bei cao) in Chinese.
